Case Review: A Look at MOONCITY Vienna – A Wow Experience That Inspires.

DMS x MOONCITY Vienna: Visitor Tracking and Analysis in an E-Mobility Pop-Up Store.
We regularly showcase projects that inspire us – down to the smallest detail. MOONCITY Vienna is one of those standout cases. For this project, we developed a professional visitor tracking system using infrared technology. In this article, we want to dive deeper into the technology: What exactly did we do? What are the benefits? And what possibilities does it open up?
Let’s talk about Retail Analytics, one of the solutions in the DMS portfolio.
With this system, various data points can be collected and analyzed via a centralized dashboard. Frequency tracking adds a new layer of measurability in physical retail spaces – going beyond point-of-sale and basket size analyses. The combination of robust, real-time data unlocks powerful insights and new creative opportunities.
Benefits.
- Performance Measurement
- Peak-Time Management – for example, better staffing strategies
- Optimization of Visitor Flow – e.g. increasing traffic through marketing campaigns
Visitor Counts – At a Glance.
- Current
- In real time
- By time of day or hourly
- Cumulative
- Across the day
- By weekday or by month
Average Dwell Time.
- By time of day
- In relation to total visitor frequency
Dashboard Access Options.
- App – With live data, ideal for store managers
- Web Browser – Live insights via desktop or mobile
- Weekly Reporting – Delivered offline for trend analysis
What the Data Enables.
The collected data helps improve and optimize:
- Marketing Effectiveness
How do press, TV, or local advertising campaigns affect foot traffic or sales? - Staff Management
Are team members deployed efficiently? Is there too much or too little staff to offer optimal customer service? - Customer Journey Optimization
When do people visit the store? Is there a link between dwell time, time of day, and visitor volume?
Beyond Analytics: Acting Proactively.
The company also values proactive data collection to professionally respond to potential government regulations, such as those related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Solution Is…
Technically, the system is based on infrared sensors installed at the store entrance – fully GDPR-compliant, of course. The store management team can access the dashboard via a smartphone app or a web browser and view real-time statistics. Weekly reports support performance tracking and ongoing optimization of visitor flows, store layout, and staff planning.
DMS supported the staging of the MOONCITY Vienna Vienna pop-up store (featuring Audi, Porsche, VW, SEAT, Škoda, CUPRA, and Moon) with a one-of-a-kind LED façade, in-store video walls, and custom content designed to bring each brand to life. In other words: a meticulously engineered wow experience.

The project was carried out as part of the Enhanced UX R&D initiative, supported by WAFF under the Innovation Assistant funding program. MOONCITY Vienna is a project we’re proud to showcase – because it’s powered by immense technical expertise, but also by passion and heart. But that’s how we approach every project – always with the DMS standard in mind: If it’s not wow, it’s not from us.
