AWE Europe: The Ultimate Augmented Reality Happening.

The name says it all: Augmented World Expo – and when it comes to ideas and innovation, you can count on us to be there. Representing DMS were Daniel Dobler, CTO, and Oliver Nitz, CMO, at AWE Europe 2023 in Vienna.

Vienna, October 24–25, 2023 – All Eyes on XR.

It was two days of everything extended reality – or XR for short. Companies from Austria and all over the world showcased their latest innovations at Melia Vienna, uniquely located at the Austria Center Vienna. The panoramic view across the city was impressive, yes – but the real spotlight was on the mind-blowing technology and concepts presented.

Yes, XR played a truly XL-sized role. But what exactly is XR?

Hyve, the innovation hub with locations in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Gran Canaria, defines it best:

“Extended Reality (XR) refers to all combined real and virtual environments and human-machine interactions – essentially an umbrella term that includes Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and everything in between.”

Fascinating. But what can we actually do with it?

Why XR Matters – Especially to Us.

As a digitalization partner, we find XR incredibly exciting. And here’s why: there are now countless apps that allow us to experience augmented reality in everyday life.

One example is IKEA Place – which lets you furnish your home virtually with real-scale furniture. Or take the Porsche AR Visualizer – you can configure your dream car online and then view it right in your driveway. In ultra-realistic detail and high resolution.

And XR isn’t limited to commerce or product design – it’s transforming art and culture too. Think about the masterpieces of Egon Schiele gaining entirely new dimensions through digital layers. It’s a reimagined experience of classic art.

XR is also quite literally a guiding force: helping people navigate complex spaces like shopping malls and museums. One standout innovation at AWE Europe was Aryve, developed by the innovation brand Svarmony. Using LiDAR sensors, it scans indoor environments to create a point cloud, which is then used to define points of interest – stores, exhibits, restrooms, exits, and more. The result? A seamless, AR-powered navigation experience that guides users precisely where they want to go.

This was just one of many innovations that left a lasting impression on Daniel – and it’s only the beginning of what’s possible with XR.

Give it a Try – it’s worth it!

Was die beiden an der AWE Europe auch begeistert: Man kann – und will!!! – alles ausprobieren. Das muss man auch, um zu erfahren, wie diese bahnbrechenden Innovationen wirken und was die Learnings daraus sind. Von den diversen neuen Brillen bis zu Simulatoren, auf denen man sitzt, die Bewegungen imitieren – in etwa die Fahrt auf einer Achterbahn … Wenn die beiden darüber sprechen, merkt man: Sie haben viele Ideen. Sie erzählen aber auch schmunzelnd:

„Man sieht jede Menge Menschen liegen, stehen, sich bewegen – mit VR-Brillen auf dem Kopf und – von außen betrachtet – sind das schon etwas eigene Bewegungen …“

Man muss sich an neue Technologien eben erstgewöhnen. Die zwei haben zwei Entwicklungen entdeckt:

• Es gibt immer mehr Anwendungen im Browserfenster – die Lust, sich noch eine weitere App runterzuladen und sich zu registrieren nimmt ab. Es wird niederschwelliger
• Es gibt jede Menge Plattformen und Lösungen – wie eine Werkbank, aufdessen Basis man eine eigene AR-Anwendung entwickeln kann

Übrigens wurde die Tour von Svarmony – dem Anbieter der Navigation für Malls und Museen – organisiert. Laut den beiden: top! Wir freuen uns, dass wir von DMS dabei sein durften. Als Digitalisierungsanbieter brennen wir für Ideen, die einfach wow sind. Und davon gab es bei diesem XR Happening viele.
